ESL (English as a Second Language) Program at Vision Academy Charter School of Excellence

Our ESL Program at Vision Academy Charter School of Excellence is dedicated to enhancing the English language proficiency of our English Learners.

Program Goals
The goals of our ESL Program, by Every Student Succeeds Act, are to empower English learners to:

  1. Communicate effectively in social settings.
  2. Excel academically in all content areas.
  3. Engage in social and cultural interactions appropriately.

Ensuring Student Success
Vision Academy is committed to ensuring the success of English Language Learners (ELL) within our ESL program and regular classroom environments. We provide equal opportunities for ELL students to participate in extracurricular activities and offer essential cultural, social, and emotional support to help them adapt to their new cultural surroundings.

Identifying ESL Students
To identify students who would benefit from ESL services, Vision Academy Charter School of Excellence employs a Home Language Survey and conducts parent interviews. We strictly adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Basic Education Circular on the Identification of English Language Learners and the Pennsylvania ESSA Consolidated State Plan of January 12, 2018.

For students whose primary home language is not English, we conduct an academic records review to determine their English language proficiency. Suppose there is no evidence of such proficiency. In that case, the students undergo screening using one of the WIDA screening tools: the WIDA ACCESS Placement Test (W-APT) for kindergarten students or the WIDA Screener for students in grades 1-12.
